Whitby, G. Elliot, Lewis, Donald P., Shafer, M., Wiley, Christopher J. 1998. A Microbiological Chemical and Physical Survey of Ballast Water on Ships on the Great Lakes. SUNTEC Environmental Abstracts from the Eighth International Zebra Mussel and Other Nuisance Species Conference, Sacramento California March 16-19, 1998 A Microbiological Chemical and Physical Survey of Ballast Water on Ships on the Great LakesA total of 71 ballast water samples were collected from 59 cargo ships in the Ports of Toronto and Hamilton and the Welland Canal during the months of November and December, 1995. The water samples were analyzed for: pH, salinity, iron, hardness, total suspended solids, percent UV transmittance, total and fecal coliforms, E. coli, enterococci, and heterotrophic plate count. All the ballast water samples were analyzed for the presence of Vibrio sp. and pathogenic E. coli. Fecal coliforms and E. coli were found in 31 (45%) of the 59 ships carrying ballast water. Enterococci were present in the ballast water of 47 vessels (80%). During the survey, E. coli serotype O111, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Provodencia rettgeri were isolated once from separate vessels. Species of Vibrio were isolated from the ballast waters of 17 vessels. The isolates were identified as V. fluvialis and V. alginoliticus along with three related species: Aeromonas hydrophila, A. sobria and A. caviae. Contact: Dr. G.
